psalm 105 worthy daily devotional

As we close out the fall feasts here in Israel I’m meditating on the deeper significance of this season. I’m realizing how God’s ordering of the festivals contains a deeper meaning than one might see at first glance. It’s not just about apples and honey and building tabernacles. The Lord gave the Jewish people these feasts as a beautiful picture of His ultimate plan; repentance, faith, atonement, forgiveness and joy. He carefully ordered these feasts to call us to a profound internal reflection designed to lead us from sin and alienation to reconciliation, fellowship, freedom and great joy.

Celebrate Freedom!

Last night began Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day) as Israelis remember the over 23,000 soldiers who’ve perished in various wars fought throughout the course of Israel’s short history. Even right now, as we write this devotion, again the sirens ring aloud. Everyone in Israel can hear the sirens at this moment and just about all of them will stop what they are doing in remembrance of those who’ve laid their lives down for this country’s freedom.

Be in Total Peace!

The Hebrew word “shalom” has meaning that is deep and rich. Peace, completeness, prosperity, safety, contentment, health, blessing, and rest are all apportioned to the meaning of this remarkable word.. The ancient Hebrew spelling of “shalom” is interesting because it speaks only indirectly about these multiple meanings, but reveals something very profound about apprehending “shalom”.

How do we achieve peace?

As we enter into day 16 of Operation Protective Shield, we read how a “ceasefire” is proposed by different countries in order to settle the conflict. However, it’s not a ‘true’ peace they want to achieve, but just a pause in the violence. A ceasefire in the eyes of Islam is called a ‘hudna’, which is understood as a time to regroup and rearm before rising to its ultimate victory. So how does one truly achieve peace?

How are your clothes fitting?

Just over six years ago, our second, Obadiah was born and he’s grown so much! It’s amazing to me how fast these kids grow. He has long since outgrown his newborn clothes and is now fitting into kids clothes, sheesh! Weighing in originally at just over 8.1 lbs, he’s already pushing 50! He likes to eat — the kid can’t get enough!

Don’t stop now – more truth and grace await.

Know You’re Led and Protected!

As most of you know, this past week the conflict in Israel has escalated. The IDF has termed Israel’s military operation, “amood anan”, which in literal Hebrew, means, “pillar of cloud”. In English it has been rendered, “pillar of defense”. The term is a direct reference from the Exodus of Israel from Egypt when they were led out of slavery and protected by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.[Exodus 13:21]. The pillar both led (directed and guided) and protected the children of Israel from the Egyptian army…providing both leadership and protection.
