During the days of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jerusalem overflowed with rejoicing. Every night, torches illuminated the city, and worshippers filled the courts of the Temple with singing, dancing, and laughter. It was said, β€œHe who has not seen the rejoicing at the Water-Drawing Ceremony has never seen joy in his life.”

Arise, Shine, for Your Light Has Come!

As Elul nears its close, the prophetic consolation swells to a crescendo. Jerusalem is no longer told merely to wait for comfort β€” she is commanded to arise and shine. Though thick darkness will cover the nations, the glory of the Lord will break forth on His people. The Bride is not called to shrink back, but to radiate the brilliance of her Beloved.

The Light, the Altar, and the Eternal Song!

These closing verses of Psalm 118 begin with an unshakable proclamation: β€œThe LORD is God.” In Hebrew, it’s emphatic — YHVH, He is El — the declaration that all authority, holiness, and sovereignty belong to Him alone. Yet this is not just a statement of who He is — it’s a testimony of what He has done: β€œHe has made His light to shine upon us.” This light is more than the glow of the sun — it is the revelation of His presence, the warmth of His favor, and the piercing truth that chases away every shadow. His light doesn’t simply illuminate — it transforms.

This piercing question opens Psalm 11 like a cry from the heart in troubled times. It’s a question we ask when law and order collapse, when truth is ridiculed, and when those who do evil seem to triumph. The foundations — the principles of righteousness, justice, and truth that uphold society — are under siege. And it begs the question: What can God’s people do when everything righteous seems to be crumbling?

Yeshua (Jesus) gave a remarkable parenthetic instruction in the middle of His Olivet discourse on the time of His coming and the end of the age. While it is unlikely that He himself said this, He certainly inspired Matthew to insert, “..let the reader understand”, concerning this critical event prophesied by Daniel, the Abomination of Desolation. His exhortation intended us (the readers of Matthew’s gospel) to learn what this means.
