Two hunters came across a bear so big that they dropped their rifles and ran for cover. One man climbed a tree while the other hid in a nearby cave. The bear was in no hurry to eat, so he sat down between the tree and the cave to reflect upon his good fortune. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, the hunter in the cave came rushing out, almost ran into the waiting bear, hesitated, and then dashed back in again. The same thing happened a second time. When he emerged for the third time, his companion in the tree frantically called out, "Woody, are you crazy? Stay in the cave till he leaves!" "Can't," panted Woody, "there's another bear in there!"
When missionary Dr. David Livingstone was working in Africa, a group of friends wrote him: "We would like to send other men to you. Have you found a good road into your area yet?" Dr. Livingstone sent this message in reply: "If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all."
Carl Armerding wrote a funny story in Moody Monthly, about his experience at the zoo. "As I stood there," he said, "an attendant entered the cage through a door on the opposite side. He had nothing in his hands but a broom.
As we press in closer to the Lord and His calling on our lives, the enemy becomes more and more fierce, throwing all kinds of darts of fear and doubt our way. But as beloved children of God, we can trust the Lord to defend us! God has an invisible army all around, ready to protect us in our times of need. When the battle intensifies, when the enemy seems to be attacking from every side, when it seems all too great for our eyes, know that the Lord has placed His protection all around you! We may not see it — but we must walk by faith!
Some experts believe that acute stress can provoke changes in the heart that may lead to death. In one study, fifteen cases were identified in which people died after a physical assault, even though the injuries alone were not enough to kill them. Eleven of the fifteen showed a type of heart-cell death, similar to a reaction in experimental animals that feel helpless to anticipate or avoid danger.
Last week, the United States experienced an earthquake — the most powerful earthquake to strike the East Coast in 67 years. For many, it was the first time they had ever experienced one. This reminded me of when we first moved to Israel, in 2003.
So often in our walks with the Lord, we become focused on what we can see, what we can hear and what we can sense in the physical realm. Like that young man, we focus on the enemy’s attacks around and about us. At times we can get so focused on our physical circumstances that we forget that the Lord has already provided for us the victory!
It's good to bring those things in our lives, which are hidden in the darkness, to the light. Many times we are slaves to them and we don't even realize it! We will go through a few devotions on this topic this week. God wants us to be free, so that we can be available for Him!
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. The captain of a submarine was once asked, "How did the terrible storm last night affect you?" The officer looked at him in surprise and exclaimed, "Storm? We didn't even know there was one!" There […]
Psalm 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? As some of you may know, a bomb exploded in a bus within blocks of our Jerusalem apartment about three years or so ago. That morning, my wife and I, along with our newborn baby, were heading […]
1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I was telling you about my wife's adventures during her newly found love for desert walks. Many people think of the desert as miles and miles of […]
Psalms 37:23-24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. My wife has taught Israeli dance workshops all over the world. And over the years, she has acquired […]
Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? My wife tells a story of when she moved to Israel some years ago for ministry before we ever met. "Times were tough in Israel at the time and I lived in an area of […]
Psalms 62:2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. We've been living in Israel now for almost two and a half years and it's not easy. Israel is the place that our Messiah will return to reign and rule. The Jewish people are to […]
Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. This was good word for us, so we thought we'd share it […]
